Emotional SMARTS®
Redefining Personal & Professional Competence
Abstract for the two-day workshop
A quote from Time Magazine says "IQ (intellectual intelligence)
gets you hired but EQ (emotional intelligence) gets you promoted." Terms
of reference have changed what constitutes business competence.
Today's business professionals needs to integrate intellectual
intelligence with emotional intelligence, or Emotional SMARTS®,
to make their companies, their families, and themselves successful.
Depending on the researcher, studies indicates that approximately
1-20% of life success come from intellectual intelligence and the
other 80-99% come from other factors. Emotional SMARTS® cornerstones
and characteristics are said to make up many of those other factors.
In addition, current studies in the area of emotional intelligence
indicates that in all jobs, in every field, emotional competence
is twice as important as purely cognitive abilities and technical
skills (Goleman, 1998). This workshop assists participants to identify
their strengths and weaknesses as they relate to this exciting
new body of research.
Emotional SMARTS® is our ability to take responsibility
for our psychological well being as we manage change - change in
the workplace, our career, our relationships, our social structures,
and our health and aging. Being emotionally smart is at the foundation
of being able to function productively and positively in areas
such as leadership, relationship building, negotiation, conflict
management, and decision making.
WORKSHOP OUTCOMES: At the end of two
days, participants should be able to:
- describe the phases of growth necessary for organizations,
departments, or relationships to go through in order for them
to be vibrant, productive, and progressive.
- reflect on and identify one's demographic status and expectations
as they deal with change.
- evaluate their proficiency in the 4 major cornerstones and
16 different characteristics of the Emotional SMARTS® model.
- analyze how millennium trends, thinking styles and related
gender differences influence one's Emotional SMARTS® or
psychological wellness in terms of relationship building, task
completion, problem solving and decision making, negotiation
and conflict management.
- examine case studies to identify examples of individuals demonstrating
Emotional SMARTS® in a variety of work and personal situations.
- assess attitudes, expectations, skills, and competencies with
regard to methods of keeping oneself emotionally smart.
From an overall perspective, this workshop is designed to help
people learn to take responsibility for their psychological wellness
as they manage change, challenges, and potential conflict. In accepting
this responsibility, participants identify and actively participate
in their personal and professional development. As a result, workshop
attendees should be able to more effectively contribute to their
workplaces, homes, and communities with the goal of having these
areas become more productive, prosperous, and pleasurable.
VALUE ADDED - SELF-SCORING PROFILE:
An Emotional SMARTS® Self-Scoring Profile is also available.
The profile consists of 94 questions and takes approximately 1.15
minutes to complete both sections of the profile. This document
is intended to assist individuals to identify their knowledge and
skill in the 4 cornerstones and 16 characteristics of the Emotional
SMARTS® model. In addition, the profile also includes CONSULTING
tips designed to enhance participant proficiency in each area.
The Emotional SMARTS® Self-Scoring Profile (ESSSP) helps
establish a common language relating to Emotional SMARTS® The
profile will be given out during the workshop and participants
may choose when they wish to complete the profile - either the
first night of the workshop or after the workshop.
In addition to the profile being a learning tool, the Emotional
SMARTS® Self-Scoring Profile could also be used to establish
a benchmark of individual proficiencies at the beginning of an
Emotional SMARTS® workshop or learning intervention and then
reapplied at a certain time interval after the workshop. In fact,
the profile could be used on an annual, or semi-annual basis. This
would enable participants to track their progress as they enhance
their emotional wellness over a specific timeframe.
