The Emotional SMARTS® Self-Scoring Profiles (short and long version) were designed by Dr. June Donaldson, Certified Mediator and Arbitrator and President of Donaldson & Associates, Inc.; Reverend Eric Haffenden, a registered psychologist and past president of the Alberta Psychological Association; and Mr. Grant Walker, President of Training and Development Materials of Canada, an individual with extensive experience in test, assessment, and profile design and distribution.

Their collective knowledge resulted in the creation of credible, reliable and valid emotional intelligence self-scoring profiles, known as the Emotional SMARTS® Self-Scoring Profile, Form A (short version) or Form B (long version) and the related Facilitator Guide.

Dr. Donaldson's intent in creating the profiles and related facilitator guide was to design a credible, cost effective, confidential easy to use and apply learning tool. She wanted people to be able to efficiently assess their emotional intelligence according to the Emotional SMARTS® model and this can now be done with either profile. Field testing of the profiles commenced in 1999.

Equally as important, she wanted to make it easy and affordable for business professionals (leaders, training and development professionals, consultants, and career counselors) to introduce emotional intelligence concepts to their organization or client base. As a result, the Emotional SMARTS® Facilitator Guide provides step by step instruction on how to administer the profiles. The guide also provides ideas on how to develop meaningful exercises for groups and it includes helpful overhead transparencies.

These learning tools are offered with a NO FEE – NO LEADER TRAINING or CERTIFICATION FEE License Agreement. It's simple. You just order the profile of your choice and the facilitator guide and it will be shipped with the License Agreement. If, for any reason, you do not agree with the terms of the License Agreement, simply return the profiles. If, on the other hand, you agree with the terms, carry on with your use of the profile. The process is not unlike opening software you might use on your computer and being asked to agree with the Supplier's License Agreement terms.

We believe the Emotional SMARTS® Self-Scoring Profiles are unique. Here's why:

  1. The profiles are self-scoring and therefore confidential! Only if the respondent elects to share their results are the results known by anyone else. Used correctly, from a respondent perspective, there is no need to worry about one's personal information being misunderstood, misused, or misrepresented.

    From a facilitator perspective, and considering newly introduced privacy laws in some countries that relate to the protection of personal information, this approach should lessen the cost, burden, litigation risk, and responsibility of personal and private information management.

  2. The profiles are credible and easy to use! From a user, education, human resource, training facilitator, organizational development, or management perspective, the Emotional SMARTS® profiles are:

    a.
    credible, reliable and valid in that they have been developed with the support of an accredited psychologist and an assessment and test designer.
    b.
    easy to use as they are self-scoring, simple in design, user friendly self-scoring documents.
    c.
    easy to relate to as they are "de-acamademicasized" and written in a layperson's language.
    d.
    easy to facilitate as they are supported by a comprehensive Facilitator Guide.
    e.
    time, money, energy, and resource efficient as there is no need to spend valuable resources tracking, following up, or managing the completion of final reports.

  3. Along with the above, facilitators have the option of using the Emotional SMARTS® material with a NO CHARGE, NO LEADER TRAINING or CERTIFICATION FEE License Agreement. The profile and facilitator guide prices are:

Here is an overview of the Emotional SMARTS® Self Scoring Profiles (ESSSP) differences:

Form A, the short form, enables people to assess their proficiency in the four main Emotional SMARTS® Cornerstones of Awareness, Behavioural, Contact, and Decision-Making.

Form B, the long form, enables people to not only do the above, but also identify their proficiency in the individual skills (known as Characteristics) that support the A, B, C, D Cornerstones identified above.

Form A takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Form B takes approximately 1.15 hours to complete.

The Facilitator's Guide provides ideas on how to use the profiles as well as copies of overhead images.
