Moving Through Change With Emotional SMARTS®
Options for the one-day or one-half day workshop
and/or
conference presentation relating to Emotional Intelligence.
Change has become the "norm" in our society. For some people,
their life experiences, behavioural style, demographic position,
attitudes, and expectations permit them to emotionally adjust to
change with ease and fluency. For others, it is not that simple.
They might find that change creates feelings of uncertainty,
a fear of the unknown, and a sense of personal vulnerability. As
a result, their reactions to change are to see it as a "loss" versus
an "opportunity". When people see change as a loss, it is easy
for them to become frustrated, fearful, and fatigued. Why? Because
when people think they have lost their voice, value, and sphere
of influence; when they believe they are vulnerable to external
influences over which they have no control; and, when they become
tired of trying to understand, cope, and manage all of life's variables,
it can be difficult to keep oneself emotionally smart.
In many cases, these feelings are the result of not understanding
the phases of change relationships, businesses, departments, careers,
and friendships go through as they grow, develop, and mature. When
people don't understand the predictable phases of growth and related
change and when they feel personally affected by these issues,
it can be overwhelming.
Dr. June believes that from both a personal and professional perspective,
the time to really start worrying about relationship quality, job
security, or career opportunity is when one's environment isn't
changing. As a result, this session is designed to give people
insight into how both organizations and relationships must grow
and change in order for them to remain productive, pleasurable,
and prosperous for everyone involved.
One of the keys to making change work in the most positive light
is being able to identify the predictable phases of growth and
the normal and natural reactions people have as they work to get
and keep themselves emotionally smart in the process.
WORKSHOP OUTCOMES. At the end of one day, participants
should be able to:
- describe the phases of growth necessary for all people, organizations,
departments, or relationships to go through in order for them
to be vibrant, productive, and progressive.
- identify the power of one's demographic status and how their
status influences how they process change
- assess their personal and professional behavioural style and
identify how their style either benefits or detracts from their
performance and results during changing times.
- assess the behavioural style of others and identify how other
styles blend or contrast with their own style.
- evaluate the benefits of modifying one's style in order to
increase harmony, fluency, respect, results, and fun in both
personal and professional relationships.
- overview the Emotional SMARTS!® model to gain insight into
the A, B, C, D, of getting and keeping oneself emotionally smart,
particularly during times of change.
From an overall perspective, this workshop is designed to help
people understand the phases of growth and related change in both
personal and professional situations. It is believed that once
people realize the normal and predictable phases of change, and
further, how they typically behave during times of change, they
will have greater insight, understanding, and comfort with what
they need to do to get and keep themselves emotionally smart during
challenging times.
LEARNING METHODS:
This workshop is interactive, participative, thought provoking,
and fun! It was designed using adult learning theory and provides
opportunity for participants to share ideas with teams and groups.
AUDIENCE:
This program is both a business and life skills emotional intelligence
workshop.
OPTIONS:
A number of options exist as to the learning tools used in the
session, and as a result, the cost of this session varies depending
on client requirements. It is recommended the client discuss their
needs, audience expectations, budget, and time considerations with
Dr. June Donaldson to ensure the session is appropriate, of high
value to participants, and in keeping with the culture and theme
of the organization.
BENEFITS: Participants will benefit through:
- greater understanding of why their organizations and relationships
must change in order for them to remain productive, pleasurable,
and prosperous.
- increased awareness of how one's behavioural style and demographic
status affect their emotional wellness and related performance
- increased understanding of how the behavioural style and demographic
status of others integrate or conflict with their own behavioural
style.
- becoming aware of what emotional intelligence, or Emotional
SMARTS®, is and how it affects their personal and professional
wellness.
Organizations will benefit through employees who can:
- appropriately self-assess and self-manage during times of growth
and change.
- assist others in understanding the need for change and the
importance of effective emotional and behaviour management
- propose and discuss growth and change initiatives in a manner
that is non-threatening and positive
- stabilize themselves and others during times of change and
uncertainty
- think long-term about their attitudes, actions, and decision
making so as to ensure they are perceived as part of the solution,
versus part of the problem.
